Spring is in the air after what feels like a longgggg Winter- it’s time to bust open the doors, blow away the flu germs and say hello to a good old spring clean.Spring is also a great time to clean out the HR side of your business, whether that’s getting your policies and procedures updated and modernised, your employee job descriptions current or employment documents legislated for the times. You would be surprised at the wonders a spring spruce up can do.

Here’s a basic list of proactive steps for you to have a think about, to keep your business optimal for the rest of the year and beyond.

  • Ensure employee contracts are in place and current. To ensure compliance, it is highly recommended to have a contract in place within eight weeks of employment. This employment agreement is your opportunity to set out how you want staff to work, the benefits on offer, along with your expectations, and what the employees will get from you in return. Make sure Job Descriptions are in place and current. It’s never too late to implement simple and effective Job Descriptions into your Company.  For the Employees who do receive one upon commencement of their job, making sure they receive a new one for any job promotion or different position within the business ensures safety and compliance for all.
  • HR Spring Clean your files and paperwork such as your employment contracts, leave request forms, medical certificates, qualifications and training docs.  Consider moving them all on to an online platform. Not only is everything you need accessible wherever and whenever you need it in one central location, but getting rid of all that paperwork is likely to restore some feng shui back into the office and organisation back into your life. Are there any hiring gaps or critical positions that need to be filled?
  • Consider training.   If you want your team to perform better, this is one of the most effective ways to do it. Now is a great time to discuss training initiatives with your staff including your management team to formulate a training plan. From further leadership and development to Customer Service 101, investing in a training plan will ensure your employees are more likely to respond well to your investment in them, which will only strengthen the employment relationship. Streamline it!
