Do you have have any casual employees?
One of the changes that came in this year for a number of general awards is regarding entitlements to casual workers. Read on to ensure that you are aware and following procedure if this change affects your business and employees.
To keep it brief; A regular casual employee (one who has worked a pattern of hours on an ongoing basis over the last 12 months) may request to be moved to permanent part-time or full time (depending on their hours).
Should you receive such a request, you may refuse only if you have genuine grounds to do so (and if you don’t know, please talk to us about it!)
Even more importantly than that, each employer must supply all casual employees with the details of this new clause, within the first 12 months of the employee’s first engagement to perform work for them. For those casual employees already employed as of today, this needs to be done by 1 January 2019.
Whilst we do not believe that this is a great cause for concern, as it is likely that many casuals will not want to become full-time or part-time employees as many prefer the casual loading that comes with being a casual, if you have any casual employees, we can provide you with a template to send to them regarding this information.
